From the start, Southern Wood
Imports has had a very strong commitment to our world’s environment.
This is not a philosophy we use as a marketing tool, it is a
necessity. After all, we are in the recycling business.
At our yard in Montrose, Colorado, our trucks and
machinery are run on Blue Sun Biodiesel. As a small business
this costs us more, but the benefits of using Biodiesel extend
beyond the bottom line. If we can do it, why can’t larger businesses?
You won’t see fancy Southern
Wood Imports lumber tarps covering your material on delivery;
we use recycled tarps from truss plants and lumber yards. We
try to reuse as much steel banding material as possible; in fact
if we can, we will return it from job sites. Yes, we use dumpster
diving technologies. If materials can be reused it saves more.
Our delivery policies are to try to use one trip for more than
one stop. Bicycles are also used in business errands and sales
calls. Our shop and office are heated with a geo exchange system.
And we will be looking into solar technology for future growth.
With all this in mind, understand that recycled and recovered
materials do take a lot of energy to bring to market with some
impact on the environment. It is all about what your personal
definition of green is, not industry marketing.
You will see the term “FSC certified” on all our
communication materials. We believe in the efforts to achieve
sustainable forests; if this awareness had been available in
the 1800’s the White Pine Forests in Pennsylvania and the Long
Leaf Pine ecosystem in the Southeast may still be viable. Our
commitment to Green is not only good business; it has become
a necessity. We are not perfect or self-righteous, but we are
aware of the earth’s challenges.
